Being a fan of cycling and Nokia Sports Tracker, I was looking for a solution to attach the N95 8GB to the handlebars of my bike. After doing some research I finally bought the Hama MP3 Bike Mount. It can be used for all kinds of devices like MP3 players, mobile phones and smaller PDAs because it has adjustable holding brackets. It is quite a cheap holder for about 10 EUR, but it's solid enough to safely hold your valuable phone. The holder isn't totally fixed to the handlebars, which allows the holder with the phone to slightly move when cycling off-road.
Reading the display can be a problem in direct sunlight. But with backlight set to on, the large letters in Nokia Sports Tracker were always readable. So the N95 can also replace any old-fashioned speedometer. However using Google Maps oder Nokia Maps in direct sunlight is difficult - you have to slow down and take a closer look at the display.
For the update I backuped and restored the phone with Nokia Content Copier. However I had to reinstall most applications. I don't really understand why some work perfectly without reinstall whereas others need to be reinstalled. All apps were installed in the phone memory.
Apps that needed to be reinstalled: emTube, Google Maps, Device Status, Internet Radio, Share Online 3.0, Maps 2.0 beta, MSDict Viewer, Travel Guide
Apps that worked without reinstall: Location Tagger beta, Screenshot, SportsTracker, SettingsWizard2
So what do these apps have in common?
This happend daily close to my hotel in New York City. When I started filming, about five cars had already passed by.
Today I created an Ovi Share / Twango account and uploaded the first picture via Share Online 3.0. Everything worked fine, however I don't really understand the benefits of Ovi at the moment. I expected Ovi to provide a full-featured mobile website. Unfortunately the mobile site doesn't allow you to add pictures to channels or even delete pictures. I hope this will get better when Ovi gets out of beta. Click on the embedded picture to jump over to my Ovi Share.
There are a lot of videos on the net about the Nokia N96. However this 6-minute video from All about Symbian is the most informative. It gives you the best overview I have seen so far, showing all the new features.
Today I tried to update Google Maps (Symbian version). While installing the latest version over the installed one, the progress bar stopped moving forward. I wasn't able to open task manager or switch off the phone with the power button.
After waiting about 15 minutes, I removed the battery. When I switched on the phone again, there was only a white screen, but no Nokia logo as during the regular boot procedure. I tried serveral times without success. The only way I could bring back life to the N95 8GB was a hard reset by pressing Call key (Green key) + * key + 3 key + power button for a couple of seconds.
Now I have to reinstall and reconfigure all my applications. I will use that opportunity to make a fresh start without restoring a complete backup.
